Rebates

Several weeks ago I made an appeal to our congregation at FBCMB to consider the truth that everything belongs to God, including the “tax rebate” that is supposed to be coming to so many of us.  I fully recognize that there are many people (many in our congregation) for whom that check will be a great blessing.  They need it to survive.  I also realize there are many of us for whom $300 or even $600 is a blip on the radar.

Everyone who follows Jesus ought not thoughtlessly go out to “stimulate” the economy by visiting theme parks or buying flat screen TVs.  Instead, we should seek to build the kingdom and exalt Christ, perhaps with at least a portion of the money.  Here are some ideas:  give to a special project in your church, scholarship a needy child to attend summer camp, support one of our IMB foreign missionaries, make it a gift to a friend who truly does need the money, spend it slowly by blessing people with small acts of kindness.

I’m motivated to write this blog today because I found this by John Piper.  He says it all much better than I do, anyway.

And aren’t you proud of me for not making any political remarks about what a joke this whole “economic stimulus package” really is?  I didn’t say a word about how it is pretty much pandering to voters who have little grasp of how the economy really works and are willing to give their political affections to anyone who gives them (some of their own) money.  :)
